What’s the difference between a local blower and an inline blower?

All range hoods must vent air either back into your home (recirculating or ductless hoods) or outside your home (ducted hoods). All range hoods pull air using some type of blower motor or exhaust fan. There are three main types of blowers: local/internal blowers, inline/remote blowers, and external blowers.

Inline vs. Remote Blowers

Sometimes, people confuse inline blowers and remote blowers. These are actually the same thing. An inline blower is a type of remote blower, meaning it is separate from the range hood.

What is a local blower?

A local blower is a blower directly inside your range hood; it is also called an internal blower. This blower is closer to your filters and your cooking space, thus it will suck more unwanted contaminants from your kitchen air. You’ll enjoy fresh and clean kitchen air.

Since the blower is directly inside the range hood unit, it can be a little louder than a remote or external blower.

All of Proline’s range hoods come with one or two – single or dual – local blowers. We’ll talk more about blower power later in the article.

Where can I buy a local blower?

Several Proline range hoods come with local blowers; we have two options that will accommodate all cooking styles. These blowers run at 1200 and 1700 CFM. Despite their power, they are exceptionally quiet, giving you peace of mind and allowing you to enjoy the company of your guests.

What is an inline/remote blower?

An inline blower, sometimes called an inline blower motor, inline fan, or a remote blower, is a type of remote blower that is not in the hood itself but positioned inside your ductwork, between the range hood and the end of your ducting. These blowers are less expensive than local blowers. They’ll provide you with a little less power, but will be much quieter. Inline blower motors are a great solution if you plan to have guests in your kitchen often or if you love to socialize with friends and family and are looking for a very quiet kitchen fan.

Even at reduced power, these blowers can still vent up to 1300 CFM of air out of your home, which is more than enough for all kinds of cooking styles.

Where can I buy an inline/remote blower motor?

We sell two inline blowers: 900 CFM and 1300 CFM.

At Proline Range Hoods, our ProV models are the only hoods that offer an inline blower option. OurProVs are highly customizable and can be paired with any of our three different types of blowers: 1200 CFM local, 1700 CFM local, or 1300 CFM inline/remote.

Not every ProV model can utilize each of these three blowers. Feel free to browse them here to find the right fit for you.

What is an external blower?

An external blower is a blower that is not inside the home. These blowers are most commonly on the roof of your home. They are often more expensive to install than local or inline blowers, but you won’t hear the range hood at all when it is running.

How powerful does my blower need to be?

This will primarily depend on your cooking style and personal preference. Blower power is measured in cubic feet per minute, or CFM. If you cook a lot and make greasy, fried, or Asian food, you’ll need a high-CFM blower.

On the other hand, if you don’t cook as often or cook on low to medium heat a lot, you won’t require as much CFM. In this case, you’ll also benefit from a much quieter range hood, allowing you to enjoy cooking as well as the company of your guests.

Some hoods come with a single blower, while others have two blowers. Hoods with dual blowers have additional power and are ideal for more serious cooks.

If you want more information on blower power, we’ve written a detailed guide on how to determine how much CFM you require for your range hood here. Range hood CFM also depends on whether you use an electric or gas cooktop; for more information on that topic, click here.

How do I decide which blower is best for me?

You often won’t have a choice as to which blower comes with your new range hood, with the exception of our ProVs as mentioned above. However, you do have control over is the maximum amount of CFM.

Proline sells range hoods ranging from a max of 600 CFM to 2000 CFM. What does more CFM do for you? Not only can you cook food more often more easily – and at higher heat levels – but also, most of our hoods feature either four-speed or six-speed control panels. This means that the higher the max CFM of your hood, the more customizable power options you will have when cooking. You can run your hood at lower speeds and your hood will last longer as well. Whatever works best for you!
