Commercial Motor Control, Residential Kitchen: Inside Proline's HE Series

Commercial Motor Control, Residential Kitchen: Inside Proline's HE Series

Key Takeaways

  • Variable frequency drive (VFD) technology. HE hoods use the same motor control commercial ventilation relies on, delivered from a standard 120V outlet.
  • Less power at everyday speeds. Fan physics means half speed can use roughly one eighth the power of full speed.
  • Keeps conditioned air inside. Dial in just enough airflow so your furnace or AC does not work to replace what you exhaust.
  • Any speed you want. Set airflow anywhere between off and maximum, not just four presets.
  • 10 year blower warranty. Backed by a smooth soft start that is easier on the motor over years of use.

Most range hoods give you a handful of buttons: low, medium, high, and maybe one more. You press one, the fan jumps to that speed, and if it's not quite right, you pick between too little and too much.

Our HE (High Efficiency) series takes a different approach. Instead of fixed speed settings, every HE hood uses a variable frequency drive, the same kind of motor control technology found in commercial ventilation systems, built into a hood designed for your home. The result is airflow you can set anywhere from a gentle draw to full power, without being locked into presets.

Here's why that matters for your home and your utility bills, how the technology works, and how to choose the right setup for your kitchen.

Why the HE Series Is Worth It

It Draws Less Power at the Speeds You Actually Use

Most of the time, a range hood isn't running at full blast. Weeknight dinners, simmering sauces, and boiling pasta usually call for low or medium airflow, and that's where the HE series has the biggest advantage.

Fan physics works in your favor here. The power a fan motor needs drops much faster than its speed does. In ideal conditions, a fan running at half speed needs only about one eighth of the power it uses at full speed. The HE drive is built to take advantage of that. It controls the motor directly at every speed instead of throttling back a motor designed to run flat out. So during the everyday cooking that makes up most of your hood's run time, it's designed to use less electricity. Your actual results will depend on your hood, your ductwork, and how you cook.

It Keeps Your Heated and Cooled Air Inside

Your electric bill isn't the only energy cost of running a range hood. Every cubic foot of air a hood pushes outside is air your furnace or air conditioner already paid to heat or cool. Outside air comes in to replace it, and your HVAC system has to work to bring that new air up (or down) to temperature.

A hood that only offers a few fixed speeds often forces you to run more airflow than the cooking needs. With an HE hood, you can dial in just enough airflow to clear the smoke and steam and no more. That means less conditioned air lost and less work for your heating and cooling system. The payoff grows during hot summers and cold winters, when every bit of conditioned air costs the most.

If you're planning around a higher CFM setup, our guide on make-up air systems covers what to expect once you cross the 400 CFM threshold.

It's Quieter

Lower fan speeds mean less noise, and precise control makes it easy to find the lowest setting that still keeps your kitchen clear. You can hold a conversation while dinner cooks instead of talking over the hood. If quiet is your top priority, the inline blower option (covered below) moves the motor out of the kitchen entirely.

It's Built for a Long Life

A variable frequency drive brings the motor up to speed smoothly instead of jolting it straight to full power. That gradual start is gentler on the motor than an abrupt one. We're confident enough in the design to back every HE blower with a 10 year warranty.

One Hood Handles Every Kind of Cooking

With fixed speeds, you're always choosing between too little and too much. With an HE hood, a gentle simmer and a smoking hot wok can both get exactly the airflow they need. And if you cook hard and often, the 1700 CFM blower gives you serious headroom for the days you need it. Not sure how much CFM your cooking really calls for? Our CFM guide walks through the math.

No Electrical Upgrade Required

Commercial kitchens often rely on three phase power to get this kind of motor control. Most homes don't have three phase power, and adding it isn't practical. The HE series gives you commercial style control from a standard 120V household supply, so you get the benefits without rewiring your home.

What "High Efficiency" Actually Means

"High efficiency" can sound like a marketing phrase, so let's be specific. On our HE hoods, it refers to how the blower motor is driven.

On many conventional hoods, lower speeds are achieved by cutting power to a motor that was built to run at full speed. The HE system works differently. A variable frequency drive (VFD) adjusts the frequency and voltage it sends to the motor, so the motor gets exactly what it needs to run at the speed you've chosen. Instead of being held back from full power, it's being driven precisely at every point in its operating range.

In everyday use, that shows up as smooth acceleration, steady airflow, and control that feels more like a dial than a set of switches.

Three Phase Power From a Standard Outlet

Here's the part that surprises people. Commercial ventilation systems often rely on three phase motors because they run smoothly and efficiently. Most homes, though, only have single phase power.

The HE control system bridges that gap. It takes power from a standard 120V household supply and turns it into a controlled three phase output for the HE blower motor. Inside the drive, the process happens in four stages:

  1. Household power comes in. Standard 120V single phase AC power feeds the control system.
  2. AC becomes DC. A rectifier converts the incoming power to DC, and capacitors smooth and stabilize it.
  3. Three phase output is created. The inverter section electronically builds a variable frequency, three phase AC signal matched to the blower motor.
  4. Speed is controlled precisely. By adjusting that output's frequency and voltage, the drive sets the motor's speed anywhere within its designed range.

You don't need to understand the electronics to benefit from them. What matters is that you get commercial style motor control without needing commercial style power.

Four Speeds vs. Any Speed

A traditional four speed hood is a good tool, but it forces a compromise. Simmering a sauce might only need a light draw, while searing steaks calls for serious capture, and plenty of cooking falls somewhere between the presets.

With an HE hood, you can hold any speed between off and maximum. Run it low and quiet while something braises, bring it up gradually as a pan heats, or go straight to full power when the wok comes out. You're matching the airflow to the cooking, not the other way around.

Choosing Your Blower

Two questions decide which blower is right for you: how hard do you cook, and where can the blower physically go?

Blower CFM Best For Placement
Local (HE) 1200 CFM Everyday cooking on 1 to 3 burners Inside the hood
Local (HE) 1700 CFM High heat work, wok cooking, searing, multiple burners Inside the hood
Inline (Variable Speed) 1300 CFM Quietest operation, long or complex duct runs In the ductwork (attic or ceiling)

1200 CFM Local (High Efficiency)

This blower mounts inside the hood and is a strong fit for everyday cooking on one to three burners. It delivers plenty of capture for most home kitchens without requiring you to oversize your ductwork.

1700 CFM Local (High Efficiency)

Same technology, more headroom. The 1700 is built for cooks who regularly do high heat work, like wok cooking, searing, or long sessions across several burners at once. On some hood models, the 1700 is offered only in larger widths, so check availability for the size you need.

1300 CFM Inline (Standard Efficiency, Variable Speed)

The inline blower solves a different problem. Rather than mounting in the hood, it installs in the ductwork, typically in an attic or ceiling space. That moves the motor noise out of the kitchen, making it the quietest option we offer and a smart choice for long or complex duct runs. It's variable speed, but it's a standard efficiency blower rather than part of the HE line, so choose it for placement and quiet operation rather than for the VFD drive.

All three blowers use a 10 inch duct outlet, which keeps duct planning simple no matter which one you choose. For more on getting the ductwork right, see our installation tips guide.

Which Hoods Use HE Technology

The HE series currently includes three models:

  • PLGW 105 HE. An under cabinet hood in premium 304 stainless steel with our newest control panel design, available in widths from 30 to 60 inches.
  • PLGW 104 HE. A wall mounted hood with an outdoor rated finish, available in 36, 42, 48, and 60 inch widths.
  • PLGI 104 HE. An island hood in 304 stainless steel, inline ready, available in 36, 42, 48, and 60 inch widths.

The same variable frequency drive technology is also available on our PROV series, including the PROVW, PROVWC, PROVI, PROVL, and the PLGL PROV outdoor insert. We're continuing to expand HE compatibility across more hood families.

A Note on Stainless Steel and Outdoor Kitchens

Several HE and PROV models offer 304 stainless steel, which resists corrosion better than 430 stainless. If your hood will live in an outdoor kitchen or a humid space, 304 is worth the upgrade. Outdoor rated models add protection against humidity, rain, and temperature swings. For a deeper look at grade and thickness, see our guide on 304 stainless steel thickness.

Built to Last, Backed for the Long Haul

Every HE blower comes with a 10 year warranty, and all HE hoods are ETL Listed for safety. See our warranty page for full details on blower and component coverage.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do HE hoods need special wiring?
No special power supply is required. HE hoods run on standard 120V household power. Installation details vary by hood and duct configuration, so check the install guide for your specific model.

What's the difference between a local and an inline blower?
A local blower sits inside the range hood. An inline blower sits in the ductwork, usually in the attic or ceiling, which moves motor noise away from where you're cooking.

What size duct do I need?
All three blower options use a 10 inch outlet.

Can I use an HE blower with the hood I already have?
HE blowers are designed for compatible HE and PROV series hoods. If you're not sure whether your hood qualifies, reach out and we'll help you check.

Will an HE hood really lower my energy bill?
It's designed to. The savings come from two places: less electricity used at everyday speeds, and less conditioned air lost through the exhaust. The actual savings depend on how often you cook, your climate, and your ductwork.

Is 1200 CFM enough for a gas range?
For most home gas ranges, yes. The general rule is 100 CFM per 10,000 BTUs of total burner output. A 60,000 BTU range needs about 600 CFM minimum, so 1200 CFM gives you real headroom. High BTU setups over 100,000 BTU may want the 1700.

Find the Right HE Hood for Your Kitchen

A range hood runs almost every day for years, so how it uses energy adds up. The HE series is designed to draw less power at the everyday speeds you use most. It helps keep the air you've paid to heat and cool inside your home, runs quieter, and is backed by a 10 year blower warranty. It brings commercial grade motor control to a residential hood without asking you to change your home's electrical service.

If you've ever wished your range hood had a setting between "not enough" and "too much," the HE series was built for you.
