Best Range Hoods for Gas Stoves

Best Range Hoods for Gas Stoves - Proline Range Hoods

A gas stove range hood is one of the most valuable appliances in the kitchen. It removes odors, steam, smoke, and potentially harmful fumes and contaminants produced during cooking.

Since gas stovetops burn fuel, they produce more heat and fumes than electric ranges. Thus they require better ventilation. Gas cooktops release toxins such as carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and nitrogen dioxide as you cook.

We want to protect your health and safety, and ensure you choose the right range hood for your stove. Check out this guide on how to choose a range hood for your gas stove.

Later we’ll go over some of our best range hoods for gas stoves, complete with customer reviews and helpful graphics!

How to Choose a Range Hood for Your Gas Stove

Gas Stove Hood CFM

The first thing to consider when looking to purchase a gas stove hood is the cubic feet per minute, or CFM. This is the absolute minimum power your range hood should have.

Start by determining the amount of British thermal units (BTUs) your gas stove produces. BTUs are the measurement for the amount of heat produced by your gas burner. One BTU increases the temperature of one pound of water by one degree Fahrenheit.

To find the total BTUs of your gas range, consult the owner’s manual. Or, look up the make and model of your stove on the internet. Many stove manufacturers advertise the BTUs on their product pages and website.

On average, a burner on your kitchen range puts out about 7,000 BTUs. Some may produce less because they’re designed for low-heat cooking whereas some can be much higher, up to 18,000 BTUs.

To determine the CFM of a gas stove hood, the general rule is this: for every 10,000 BTUs generated by the gas range, 100 CFM is needed. So, if your range has two 5,000 BTU burners and two 15,000 BTU burners for a total of 40,000 BTUs, you will need 400 CFM or more for your range hood.

At Proline, most of our customers purchase a hood with a CFM higher than this initial minimum amount. This improves the ability of your range hood to keep your cooking space free of unwanted contaminants, smoke, and steam.

Also, the high CFM is incredibly convenient in the event of an emergency.

If you do a lot of high-heat cooking with your gas range, consider adding 200 to 300 CFM to this initial calculation.

If you have an electric deep fat fryer, we encourage you to follow the recommendations for a gas stove.

For more information on determining the CFM of your hood over a gas stove, click here.

Gas Stove Hood Size

The larger the range hood, the more air it will capture to vent outside your home. To ensure that all unwanted contaminants and cooking exhaust is vented outside, we recommend that you purchase a hood six inches larger than your range (3 inches on both sides).

Even if you have a powerful blower in a range hood but your hood is too small, you won’t have adequate coverage and some fumes will escape into your kitchen.

If you have a gas stove in your outdoor kitchen, the size of your range hood will need to be even larger. You’ll have to compensate for weather conditions and the intense heat of your grill.

Choose a hood that is two sizes up from your stovetop, extending six to 12 inches on each side. For example, if you have a 48” range, a 60” outdoor hood is ideal.

Remember, bigger is better when it comes to the coverage area of your range hood for a gas cooktop. Make sure the depth of your hood is also sufficient to capture fumes and odors. If your hood is too shallow, it will miss the smoke and grease produced during more intense cooking.

Typically, vent hoods will extend at least halfway past your range, and some may reach up to its edge.

Remember, every range hood should be installed 28 to 36 inches away from the gas stovetop. If the hood is further away than 36 inches, you’ll require more ventilation power. If it’s too close, your hood will not operate efficiently and may become damaged.

Baffle Filters

Select a range hood with stainless steel baffle filters as they allow the air from your gas stove to move through the hood faster than regular filters.

Baffle filters are ideal to handle the heavy smoke and grease from cooking with high heat gas stoves. Stainless steel filters are also easier to clean and they are a nice modern touch to your vent hood.

Many of Proline’s range hoods come with attractive stainless steel baffle filters.

Duct to the Outside of the Home

Ventilation is one of the most important things to consider with your gas stove. For the best results, use ducted venting with your gas stove so that your dirty kitchen air will be vented outside. The more BTUs your gas stove has, the more important it is for you to duct your hood to the outside.

A non ducted or ductless range hood is not the best option for gas stoves because they work by filtering the air inside the hood and returning it into the kitchen. Even if you have a hood with a high CFM rating, charcoal filters will not capture all the gas produced by the stove.

In addition, a ductless range hood is incapable of removing the heat and moisture from your kitchen, which may leave you hot and humid while using your gas burners on higher settings.

Duct Length

The shorter your ducting, the more efficient it will be at removing air contaminants from your kitchen. The air has less distance to travel and thus requires less power to evacuate from your home.

You may require a professional level hood if your ducting is very long or if it has more than two 90-degree turns. For maximum efficiency, don’t run your ducting more than 30’, or 20’ with two elbows.

Duct Size

If you choose to go with a high CFM gas stove hood, the most important thing to do is make sure that your ventilation ducting is a wide enough diameter to accommodate the power of your range hood.

Here is a helpful chart to determine the duct size for your hood.

If your duct is too small, it will decrease the ability of the blower to capture enough air for peak efficiency. Overall, a larger, more powerful kitchen range hood is best suited for gas cooktops as they release more concentrated fumes.

Aim for at least 1000 CFM and an 8” or larger diameter duct. Add beautiful baffle filters to that to enjoy the best range hood for your gas stove. The exact CFM will depend on your cooking habits, but 1000 is a safe bet for most cooks. When in doubt, go for the higher CFM.

Customer Reviews

“I remodeled my kitchen about 2 years ago and decided that I wanted a real exhaust fan and hood above my stove. So I ordered a model PLJW 129.30 from Proline. Of all of the improvements to my kitchen, this has turned out to be one of the best. It really looks great. The fan is so powerful that most of the time I run it on the lowest setting, but more power is there when I need it. Hanging the hood was very easy (watch the installation video on the Proline website); however, if you don’t have an electrical outlet and a duct vented up through the roof at the right locations (I didn’t have either), installation is going to be a lot more involved and expensive – so plan accordingly. Proline shipped the unit right away after I ordered it. It was well packed and contained all of the parts. I’ve emailed them a couple of times and they respond by the next day. If I had it to do over again, I would order the PLJW 129.30 from Proline. It turned out great.” - Steve M.

“We had a GE hood installed in our home when it was built in 2017. The GE hood did not have much power 350cfm and did not do a good job removing the cooking fumes. Our new Proline hood works amazingly and is beautiful also. My wife loves it. Thank you for making an excellent product.” - Tim E.

Best Under Cabinet Range Hoods For Gas Stoves

Next up are under cabinet range hoods. These hoods are typically the lowest CFM range hoods on the market. But, professional quality under cabinet hoods from Proline are some of the most powerful on the market. They are more than capable of handling the high heat produced by your gas stove. Check out our complete list of under cabinet hoods here.

Some homeowners can get away with under 600 CFM for their electric stove, but for gas stoves, we highly recommend 600 CFM or more. As we’ve emphasized throughout our article, when in doubt, go with the higher CFM hood.

PLJW 185

The PLJW 185 is our most popular under cabinet range hood. It features a quiet, ultra-efficient dual blower rated at 600 CFM. This product provides great value – professional quality at an incredibly affordable price. Like most of our other under cabinet hoods, the 185 is complete with efficient grease filters and LED lights to brighten your stove top. The control panel is beautiful and functional, with elegant stainless steel push buttons.

Most hoods from big manufacturers don’t feature motors that are powerful enough for your gas stove, but our 185 checks all the boxes. It’s one of the best range hoods for gas stoves that fits under your cabinet.

ProVI

The ProVI is one of our most versatile island range hoods. It is one of few models compatible with a remote blower that sits inside your ductwork. This makes the hood incredibly quiet while it’s running. The remote blower is quite powerful at 1300 CFM – and you also have two options for local blowers: 1200 and 1700 CFM.

Like the other hoods on this list, it is easy to clean, thanks to beautiful dishwasher safe baffle filters. In addition, it includes bright lights that you can’t go without.
