Home renovation spending, including kitchens, will decline slightly in 2024 due to interest rates and supply chain issues. But it’s still big, $485 billion by the end of 2024.

Each year, Houzz publishes a kitchen trends and stats report. In their 2022 report, Houzz surveyed over 2,000 homeowners between July 21 and 27, 2021. They were asked all kinds of questions about their renovation, from price and size to which appliances they bought.

These homeowners had either completed a kitchen remodel or addition in the past 12 months, were in the process of remodeling, or were planning to remodel in the next three months.

We’ve highlighted some of the most interesting statistics from this report in our post, broken down into specific categories.

Nearly half (45%) of homeowners are renovating because they finally have the means (budget, time, etc.).

Thirty-five percent say their kitchen badly needs an update, while 29% say their kitchen is old and broken down.

The most renovated feature is countertops (91%), followed by backsplashes (86%), and then sinks (84%).

Most homeowners (70%) do not change the size of their kitchen during their renovation.

Twenty-four percent renovate their kitchen somewhat larger (up to 50% larger), while six percent increase their kitchen size significantly (over 50%).

Most renovated kitchens (54%) are over 200 square feet.

The median price for major kitchen remodels is $40,000.

This figure is up $5,000 from 2021. A major kitchen remodel means at least all cabinets and appliances are replaced.

Nearly 80% of homeowners splurge on at least one new kitchen feature.

The leading feature is countertops (35%), followed by appliances (27%) and cabinets (23%).

 

Thirty-eight percent of homeowners make their kitchen open to interior spaces, down eight percent from 2020.

Twenty percent of homeowners open their kitchen to the outdoors, down two percent from 2020.

89% of all homeowners hire a pro for their renovation project, up four percent from 2021.

The most popular pro hired is a general contractor (53%) followed by a cabinet maker (31%).

12 Kitchen Island and Countertop Statistics for 2022

Forty-two percent of people install engineered quartz countertops, down from 51% in 2020.

Look and feel (67%) and durability (58%) are the two biggest reasons for upgrading countertops.

Nearly a quarter (22%) of homeowners use contrasting countertop styles.

The most popular contrasting style is a butcher block (35%) followed by engineered quartz (26%).

Over half of homeowners (57%) add or upgrade an island for their renovation.

Most upgraded islands are over 7 feet long (39%), up five percent from 2021.

Most renovated islands feature cabinets with doors (78%) or drawers (74%).

About one quarter (24%) of people choose contrasting colors for their island counter. White (32%) is the most popular.

Nearly half of homeowners contrast their island cabinet colors. Blue (26%) is the most popular, followed by gray (18%), then black (10%).

Nearly a third (28%) of homeowners perceive they are eating healthier after installing their kitchen island.

Aside from cooking, about half of homeowners say they entertain at their kitchen island, while less than half (44%) socialize at their island.

The L shape is most popular (40%), followed by the U shape (31%) and then the galley style, which has two facing walls (13%).

7 Kitchen Appliances Statistics for 2022

Standard stainless is the overwhelming favorite for appliances (74%), up three percent from 2021.

 

The most popular choice for upgraded appliances is a refrigerator or freezer (73%), followed by a dishwasher (71%) and microwave (69%).

Coffee makers are the most popular small appliance (21%), followed by an air fryer (15%), then food storage containers (15%).

 

Over a third of homeowners add high-tech features to their appliances (35%).

 

The most popular high-tech appliance feature is wireless smartphone and tablet controls (26%), followed by a color touch screen display (16%).

Half of homeowners upgrade all their appliances while an additional third upgrade some of their appliances.

Over a quarter (27%) of homeowners splurge on all their appliances, trailing only countertops (35%).

6 Kitchen Cabinet Statistics for 2022

Almost all (94%) of homeowners either replace all (65%) or partially replace (29%) their cabinets.

Of the 94% of homeowners that replace cabinets, 76% choose solid wood for their cabinets, while 20% choose plywood.

Shaker cabinets are the most popular choice for cabinetry (64%), up eight percent from 2021.

Nearly half of homeowners (45%) add a pantry cabinet, while 13% add a walk-in pantry.

Twelve percent of homeowners choose contrasting island cabinet styles. 43% of them choose shaker cabinets for their kitchen island, followed by raised panel cabinets (23%).

Nearly a quarter of homeowners (23%) splurge on kitchen cabinets, behind only appliances (27%) and countertops (35%).

7 Kitchen Color Trends and Style Statistics for 2022

Eighty-three percent of homeowners change the style of their renovation.

The most popular style for renovated kitchens is transitional (25%), up four percent from 2021.

Farmhouse design is down two percent (9%) from 2021 (11%). It’s five percent lower than its peak in 2019 (14%).

White is unquestionably the most popular cabinet color (41%), followed by medium wood (12%).

White countertops reign supreme (39%) in 2022, up six percent from 2021.

White is the most popular color for walls among homeowners (32%), up six percent from 2021.

White is the most popular backsplash color (40%), followed by multicolored (20%).

5 Kitchen Flooring Statistics for 2022

Over half of homeowners (51%) choose wood flooring for their renovation. Grey is a distant second at 13%.

One-quarter of homeowners use stained or unstained hardwood flooring for their renovation.

Vinyl flooring has increased by nearly 10% (23%) compared to 2020 (14%).

Nearly ⅔ of homeowners upgrade their flooring (64%).

Flooring is behind countertops, backsplashes, sinks, faucets, and light fixtures, as the most popular upgrades for homeowner renovations.

Just 12% of homeowners splurge on their flooring.

6 Kitchen Extras Statistics for 2022

The most popular backsplash material is ceramic or porcelain (56%).

Two-thirds of homeowners install a backsplash up to their cabinets or range hood, while 19% install one with partial coverage.

Undercabinet (67%) and recessed (66%) lights are the most popular choices for lighting fixture upgrades.

Pendant lights are the most popular light fixture above a kitchen island (67%), up four percent from 2021.

Eighty-seven percent of homeowners add new decor as part of their kitchen renovation.

Half of the homeowners add bar stools during their renovation, followed by wall decor (48%) and window coverings (38%).

Homeowner Preferences: Many homeowners are choosing high tech appliances, with more interest in Wi-Fi and smart home integration. This means a more connected and efficient kitchen.

Backsplash and Countertop: Homeowners are replacing backsplashes, ceramic or porcelain tiles are the most popular. Counters are becoming a style statement, ultra thin profiles and terrazzo is trending.

In general, 2024 kitchens are all about sustainability, technology and multifunctionality, like the rest of the home.
