Can my range hood use both Halogen and LED lights?

It is not recommended to use both Halogen and LED lights in your range hood, and it is often not possible. You should instead stick to what the range hood manufacturer or owner’s manual says.

Some range hoods have drivers or transformers to reduce the flow of electricity. Drivers are used for LED bulbs, while transformers are used for Halogen bulbs.

If you want to switch from Halogen to LED or LED to Halogen, you’ll need to switch from a transformer to an LED driver, or vice versa.

An LED driver supplies the bulb with electricity by converting alternating current (AC) to direct current (DC). It takes the more dangerous, high-voltage AC and converts it to a low-voltage DC.  The driver is connected to the lights and the circuit board in the range hood, and to replace it, it’s as simple as unplugging it and plugging in the new one.

Your typical outlet is 120 V. Since LED bulbs are powered with just a few volts, they require a driver to control the amount of electricity that flows through the bulb.

In contrast, halogen bulbs require transformers which also convert the current to a lower voltage.

LED drivers that power LED bulbs use direct current, while Halogen transformers use 12-volt alternating current. An LED bulb will not run properly with a transformer; they will flicker and they may burn out. This is because most LED bulbs run at just 2 or 3 volts; if you hook them up to a 12 volt AC transformer, too much electricity will run through the bulb and it will pop.

Some range hoods don’t have a driver or transformer. In most cases, the driver is built into the lightbulb, which makes swapping between Halogen and LED bulbs simply a matter of switching out the bulbs. But, again, confirm this with the distributor before doing anything with your range hood lights.

What kind of lightbulb goes in a range hood?

Most range hoods use either LED lights or Halogen lights. Some use incandescent bulbs, although these are less common in today’s market.

Can I use a regular light bulb in my range hood?

Energy costs vary, but LED light bulbs cost anywhere from 5 to 30 cents per Kilowatt-hour. This turns out to be incredibly cheap after one year of use. Costs can range from $1 for a full year to around $20 if you leave your LED light on all the time. Since you use your range hood only while cooking, the cost to run the LED light is negligible.

What happens if I use a light bulb with greater wattage in my range hood?

Using a light bulb that is too high in wattage may damage your range hood. LEDs in particular do not withstand heat, so it’s important to consult your range hood manufacturer before inserting new light bulbs into your hood.

The light is dimming and the fan is very low on a 2-month-old range hood. What might cause this?

First, check to make sure that your range hood is plugged in firmly. Also, look inside the hood and make sure there are no loose wires or connections. If the electrical looks good, you may have a faulty circuit board. The dimming light could also mean that you have a broken touch panel. Things to Check Before Replacing Your Range Hood Lights

Test your current lights to confirm that they are not working.

Ensure that the range hood is plugged in securely.

First, check your outlet to make sure that your hood is plugged in. A loose connection can cause issues with your range hood as well as your lights.

Make sure that the light fixture is secure in the hood.

When you are ready to replace your lights, power off your range hood, and unplug it.

For your own safety, unplug your range hood before replacing the overhead lights. You don’t want to produce any sparks or start a fire.

Check your Rheostat dial knobs.

Flickering lights may occur due to faulty Rheostat controls. In this case, replacing the light will not fix your issue. So, make sure your Rheostat knobs work before replacing your lights.

I put a new light bulb in my range hood and it works but won’t shut off.

If a new lightbulb won’t shut off in your range hood, you may need to replace your control panel. Call your manufacturer to ask for a replacement control or touch panel. Also, be sure to ask them if they have any other ideas why the light bulb would stay on.

I need to add an additional LED light to my range hood. Can I bypass the LED transformer?

We don’t recommend bypassing an LED transformer. Every transformer has a max wattage and voltage. Adding an LED light to your hood could overload and break the transformer. Check with your manufacturer or an electrician before you bypass an LED transformer.
