Can I install a range hood over a Big Green Egg grill?

Can I install a range hood over a Big Green Egg grill? - Proline Range Hoods

You just bought your Green Egg grill and you’re ready to barbecue! But there’s one problem: all the smoke it produces!

You might wonder: can I install a range hood over a Big Green Egg grill? It would solve the problem of the smoke and vent out pesky cooking odors and grease too. Unfortunately, a range hood is not a good option.

We do not recommend installing a range hood over a Big Green Egg grill. Unlike a gas grill, the temperature is not regulated with a Big Green Egg grill. Green Eggs can reach temperatures of up to 750º. This excessive heat can damage your range hood.

If you want to install a range hood over your Green Egg, you must watch its temperature at all times. If you reach temperatures above 550 degrees, you could damage your range hood.

Here are a few things to keep in mind if you choose to mount a hood over your Big Green Egg.

  • Mount your hood 36 to 42 inches above the Green Egg grill.
  • Buy a hood 12 inches larger than the Green Egg. For example, if you have a 36” Green Egg, buy a 48” range hood or larger.
  • Buy a hood made with outdoor-rated materials such as 304 stainless steel.
  • Buy a hood with a 1200+ CFM blower to vent heavy smoke out of your kitchen
  • Leave the lid closed while cooking. Opening the lid will cause the grill to heat up rapidly, beyond the 750º F upper limit. In fact, the inside of your grill could reach several thousand degrees Fahrenheit. This won’t only damage your range hood but also ruin your Green Egg.

Keep in mind that following the above tips doesn’t guarantee your hood will be undamaged.

How does a Big Green Egg grill work?

Big Green Eggs have a box at the bottom of the grill called a firebox. All you need to do is fill this box with charcoal and ignite it to heat up your grill. Open the vent to let oxygen in and help the fire burn. The wider you open the vent, the hotter your grill will get.

After you’ve cooked your meal, just seal the vent at the bottom and the top lid. This will prevent oxygen from entering the firebox. Without oxygen, the charcoal will cool down naturally.

Green Egg grills are made of an ultra-durable ceramic material that keeps the lid cool to the touch. Even at incredibly high temperatures, your Green Egg grill is safe for use.

How to Regulate The Temperature of Your Green Egg Grill

The key to regulating the temperature of your Green Egg grill is to adjust the vent at the bottom of the grill.
