What’s a chimney extension?
A chimney extension is an additional chimney accessory for your range hood which attaches either to your existing chimney or directly to your range hood and covers your ductwork.
If you need more chimney than your hood comes with – or if your hood doesn’t come with a chimney at all – that’s when you would want to buy a chimney extension.
Depending on your current kitchen ventilation setup, the height of your ceiling, and if your range hood came with a chimney originally, you may or may not need an additional chimney extension.
Do I need a range hood chimney extension?
Many range hoods come with chimneys; typically these are either range hoods mounted against a wall or hoods that are free standing above an island.
For many standard ceiling heights, you won’t need an additional extension for your range hood. But for those with high ceilings, an extension may be necessary.
At Proline Range Hoods, we offer numerous options for chimney extensions as low as 8’ and as high as 12’. This article will provide a guide on which size extensions you should buy depending on your ceiling height.
Note: We do not accept returns on our chimney extensions.
Indoor Hoods
Most of our chimneys for indoor range hoods accommodate 8-9’ ceilings as they are telescoping, making their height adjustable. However, depending on how high you mount your hood, the standard chimney may not cover all your ductwork.
Distance Between Range Hood and Cooktop
Be sure to consider the distance between your hood and your cooktop when purchasing a chimney extension.
Ideally, mount your hood between 28” and 36” from your cooktop. If you own an outdoor hood, though, mount it between 36” and 42” from the cooktop to accommodate for the additional heat produced by outdoor grills.
If you mount your hood closer to the cooktop, then you may need a larger chimney extension. On the other hand, if you mount your hood far away from the cooktop, it’s unlikely that you will need any extensions.
Ceiling Height
In most cases, an extension (or multiple) can be added to your hood for up to 12’ ceilings.
For shorter ceilings, we offer custom cuts to get the perfect fit. Just give us a call at (877) 901 - 5530 check the minimum chimney height on a hood – or if you would like assistance determining the size of your chimney extension.
If your hood can’t be vented through the ceiling (if you live in an apartment or condo), you may want to consider a ventless or ductless hood. This type of hood recirculates the air throughout your home and does not require a chimney extension.
Outdoor Hoods
Like indoor hoods, the height of your outdoor range hood and how high you mount the hood will determine whether you require a chimney extension.
Out of the box, most of our range hoods accommodate 8-9’ ceilings. With our recommended mounting height above your cooktop, many of our models accommodate taller ceilings as well.
For shorter ceilings, we offer a handful of custom chimney extensions. These will be outlined later in the article.
Note: If you are using your hood outdoors, it must be sheltered from the weather and the elements in some way. This will maximize its efficiency and longevity.
Outdoor hoods are designed to be durable; however, when exposed to the outdoors, consistent water and snow will reduce the life of your hood. It may damage your hood as well – and you don’t want that.
My ceiling height is taller than most kitchens. What do I do about ventilation?
Custom chimney extensions are available for range hoods with chimneys for up to 12' ceilings. See the image below.
If your ceiling is higher than 12', you will likely need to look into having your extension manufactured locally by a metal fabrication shop.
What size chimney extension do I need for my hood?
The size of your chimney extension depends on the height of your ceiling. Hopefully this list below helps you determine the best chimney extension for your hood.

Did you purchase a custom hood or a hood initially without extensions?
There is a manual method to calculate the size of your extensions if you bought a custom hood. Or perhaps you purchased your hood without an extension initially, but now realize you need an extension.
Calculate the size of your chimney extension as outlined below.
Gather All Your Measurements
Whether you have already purchased your hood or are still shopping for the right one, be sure to take a few measurements and plan ahead to make the process as simple and easy as possible. Here are all the measurements you will need to make the best possible purchase and assist any professional helping you find the right hood and order the right chimney extensions as well..
1. Measure your ceiling height.
Start by measuring the height of your ceiling from your floor to your ceiling. Write these all down because you will need these numbers later.
2. Measure the height of your range.
Now that you have measured the height of your ceiling, measure from the floor to the top of your range or cooktop.
3. Plan to install your hood between a height of 28" to 36" from your cooktop.
To capture air with unwanted toxins and chemicals most efficiently, make sure that you install your hood between 28"-36" from your cooking surface. Decide what height you want your hood mounted at and make a note of it. We are now ready for the next step.
4. Measure the height of your range hood. (if you already have your hood)
If you’ve already bought a range hood, measure the height of the hood only. Do not include the chimney pieces in this measurement; rather, include only the base section of the hood.
5. Do the math to find the total space left for your chimney extension.
Now add up all the numbers you have collected so far and subtract them from your total ceiling height. That is the remaining distance you will want you chimney and extensions to cover.
In the example below, we determined the total space left for the chimney extension for an eight-foot ceiling.
Ceiling height = 12 ft or 144 inches
From the floor to the top of the range – or range height = 36 inches
Distance between the cooktop and range hood = 28 inches
Height of the range hood = 16 inches
36 + 28 + 16 = 80 inches - This is the height from your floor to the top of your range hood.
Now subtract 80 inches from your ceiling height to calculate the space left for chimney extensions.
144 - 80 = 64 inches
Sixty-four inches is the total space left for the chimney extension of your range hood. Now that you know the size, you can begin your research to find a custom chimney extension perfect for your kitchen. We hope this information on calculating the size of your chimney extensions has helped you. Now we’ll review the chimneys and extensions of our products here at Proline Range Hoods.
Proline Range Hood Models and Chimneys
At Proline Range Hoods, we sell dozens of range hood models. It can be difficult to keep track of which models already come with chimneys. In general, our wall mounted range hoods and island range hoods come with a chimney included, while the range hood inserts and under cabinet hoods are not sold with chimneys at all. All of our range hood chimneys are telescoping, making the height adjustable.
If you need more chimney that your hood comes with or if your hood doesn’t come with a chimney at all, that’s when you would want to buy a chimney extension.
Proline’s wall mounted range hoods come with two telescoping 15” chimneys, while island hoods come with two 19” chimneys. The wall hood chimneys can extend up to 31”; you can freely adjust these depending on your kitchen design.
Unlike wall mounted hoods, island range hoods, because of how they are manufactured, can only be installed with two chimneys. You can use:
- The two 19” chimneys that come with the hood
- One 19” chimney and one extension (of a different length)
- Two chimney extensions (of different lengths)
Note: Additional chimney extensions ship separately from your range hood. Check out our product pages to view the prices of our chimney extensions.
If you would like additional details regarding what extensions are available for our different models, please read on. We’ve separated our models into three groups. Most of our products fit into these three groups below; there are some exceptions though, which are detailed below as well.
- Wall Hoods - Chimney Extensions for 10’ and 12’ Ceilings
- Island Hoods - Chimney Extensions for 10’ and 12’ Ceilings
- Under Cabinet Range Hoods and Range Hood Inserts
- Under Cabinet Hoods - Chimney Extensions for 7’-10’ Ceilings
- Under Cabinet Hoods - Chimney Extensions for 8’-10’ Ceilings
We hope that this will help you choose the best chimney extension for you.

Under Cabinet Range Hoods and Range Hood Inserts
In most cases, since these range hoods should be enclosed in the cabinet, they don’t come with chimneys to enclose them – and hence won’t require chimney extensions.
Some of our wall mounted range hoods also double as under cabinet hoods, and come with extensions for 7’-10’ ceilings.
Our range hood inserts and most of our under cabinet hoods do not come with chimney extensions. However, you have a few different custom options for extensions, if necessary.
The following under cabinet models come with extensions appropriate for 7’-10’ ceilings. Review the table at the beginning of the article to see which extension is appropriate depending on your ceiling size.
Note: Many of our wall mounted range hoods also function as under cabinet hoods.
