Average Range Hood Installation Time and Cost

Average Range Hood Installation Time and Cost - Proline Range Hoods

How much does it cost to install my range hood?

At Proline Range Hoods, we’ve had a lot of experience installing range hoods over the years. We don’t, however, recommend or refer installers to our customers. We strictly manufacture our professional quality hoods and sell them at better than fair prices.

A stainless steel range hood is a great first step for home improvement, but before people commit, one of the questions they often ask is:

"How much should I expect to pay a contractor to install my range hood?"

In general, plan on about $200 to $500 depending on the complexity of your installation.

This includes the labor cost of installing a new vent hood and does not include parts, adding or modifying ductwork, or electrical work.

On average, plan on paying about $85 per hour plus a trip fee ranging between $50 and $100 to install your new range hood.

Below you will find range hood installation cost based on averages across the country for the different types of range hoods and installers.

You may experience higher or lower amounts of time and cost for a variety of reasons. But hopefully, these tips will give you a starting point.

Under Cabinet Vent Hoods

Most under cabinet range hood models cost between $200 and $400 to install. They typically require between 1.5 hours and 2.5 hours of installation labor depending on the size and the number of supports required.

Generally, the larger the range hood, the more time allowed for installation.

A typical 30” under cabinet range hood with 900 CFM and a single 7” to 8” blower outlet duct requires 1.5 hours of labor time. This installation can easily be completed by most homeowners in that amount of time.

Whereas a 42” under cabinet hood with two blowers may take closer to 2.5 hours. But, it is still perfectly doable for the average homeowner.

Many homeowners in today’s high-performance kitchens place a large under cabinet range hood on the wall and install large chimney covers extending up to the ceiling. These time and price estimates do not include large chimney cover pieces or other custom work.

Also, please note that these estimates assume that ductwork is existing and properly placed and that electrical power is already available in the proper location.

Note: This model is discontinued, but the installation process is very similar for all under cabinet models.

Wall Range Hoods

The average cost of installation for a wall mounted range hood is between $50 and $100 to install in an eight to nine-foot ceiling. These range hoods require between 1.5 and 2 hours to install, which varies based on the model. In general, these models are the easiest and least expensive to install.

The typical wall mount range hood includes a main control unit that houses the local blower, lights, and some type of filter. Once the main control unit is mounted to the wall, the ductwork is connected and the ductwork cover, or the “chimney” of the range hood, is installed.

Most wall mounted range hoods or vent hoods can be easily installed by most homeowners with only a few simple tools.

Note: Depending on your ceiling height, you may require a chimney extension for your wall range hood. To learn more about chimney extensions, click here.

Island Range Hoods

The average cost of installation for island hoods ranges between $300 and $500 on average. These hoods require the most installation time: at least 1.5 to 3 hours for the smaller models.

In some cases, you will need at least 3-4 hours and an additional person to install a larger island range hood.

Our advice is to look for an installation video for whatever type of kitchen hood you have. If you cannot find your exact model, look for similar models. Some models may be easier to install than others.

Island range hoods are installed through the roof. The cost to install your vent hood through the roof will be higher than installing through a side wall.

In many cases, you can save money on your island range hood installation by helping the contractor hang the unit. This is generally the only time you will need a second pair of hands to help lift, mount, and secure the new range hood. The average “do it yourself” homeowner should be able to tackle an island range hood installation in a few hours.

How do you install an island range hood?

Unlike other types of vent hoods, inserts can easily be installed. It only takes four steps; learn more here.

Note: Inserts require ductwork, so if you don’t have that installed in your kitchen, you will need to contact a local HVAC company or a builder to install the ducting.

Vent Hood Inserts

Unlike other types of vent hoods, inserts can easily be installed. It only takes four steps; learn more here or check out our video below.

Note: Inserts require ductwork, so if you don’t have that installed in your kitchen, you will need to contact a local HVAC company or a builder to install the ducting.

Do range hoods have to be vented outside?

No; range hoods do not have to be vented outside. There are two main ways range hoods or vent hoods function or move the air from off your stovetop.

The first way is to blow the air out the top of the hood into the kitchen, which recirculates it throughout the room. These kinds of hoods can fit over an island or against a wall or under a cabinet. They are called ductless or recirculating hoods.

The other way is to completely remove the air, fumes, and smoke from the room to the exterior of the home through ductwork. These vent hoods are called ducted hoods.

Some vent hoods are referred to as convertible hoods because they can be installed as either ductless or ducted.

Ductless Range Hood Installation Time and Cost

To install a ductless range hood you can expect to pay between $100 and $300.

Ductless hoods are most commonly installed over electric cooktops or hoods that are in apartments or condos (where additional ductwork either isn’t or can’t be installed).

Ductless hoods use a charcoal filter to trap contaminants and filter the air. This filter requires replacement after about 120 hours of cooking or every three to six months (depending on how heavily the cooktop or range is used).

Ductless hoods are easier to install because, as the name suggests, they do not require any ductwork. They usually take between one to three hours to install. A ductless hood installation will also cost less because you won't have to pay for the ducting.

Ducted Range Hood Installation Time and Cost

The cost of installing a ducted range hood varies greatly depending on the hood’s size. It may range from $100 to $1000.

Ducted hood installations can take up to four hours. The price will likely increase based on the size of the job. Larger range hoods and larger ductwork typically takes longer and costs more, but every case varies.

Note: Some people choose to vent their air to an attic or between joists in their house. That is never ideal. If the air is vented to an attic, the cooking exhaust remains in your home, which may lead to poor indoor air quality. We always recommend you vent the air from your range or vent hood directly to the outside of your home for your health and safety.

Commercial Vent Hood Installation Cost

If you own a restaurant, you'll likely need a commercial vent hood.

Commercial vent hoods are much more powerful than residential vent hoods. They are built to withstand heavier heat and they come with fire safety measures to ensure that you have a safe work environment at all times.

Installing your commercial vent hood will cost thousands of dollars. Like with residential vent hoods, larger hoods will cost more money to install.

Installation costs vary widely depending on where you are located, so we recommend that you request a quote from your contractor or install company.

Here at Proline, we recommend Eastbay Restaurant Supply and Rochester Restaurant Supply for your commercial vent hood installation needs.

Do electricians install range hoods?

Some electricians may install range hoods, but we recommend that you look for a contractor or builder with some experience installing kitchen appliances to mount your range hood. An electrician can set up the wiring for your range hood once it is installed, but this is only necessary in rare cases. Most range hoods come with extension cords and all you need to do is plug it into the wall.

Some people choose to do their range hood installation on their own, which is a great option as well. Refer to the videos above if you want to mount your range hood on your own. Or check out more of our instructional videos on this page.

That’s it for our guide on average range hood installation time and cost. Hopefully you found this information helpful.
