Whether you connect your range hood to an outlet or hardwire it, it’s important to know how many amps your range hood draws.
When buying a range hood, one often overlooked item is the electrical wiring and amperage. Before you mount your hood, ask the manufacturer if you need to hardwire your hood into your home’s electrical system. If not, you can plug it into a regular 110V outlet. Either way, make sure you are close enough to the electrical fixture you need.
After all the work installing your hood, it would be disappointing to find out that adding a range hood to your circuit breaker overloads it. We suggest checking what appliances are on your circuits before installing your hood.
Overloading your circuit breaker can be dangerous. So, if you have any doubt, consult an electrician.
Your range hood draws between five and seven amps. It can run on its own circuit or a circuit with other less powerful appliances. Just be careful to not overload the circuit breaker. To be safe, run your range hood on a dedicated 20 amp circuit breaker.

Does a range hood need a dedicated circuit?
No. A range hood can run on a circuit with more than one appliance. The most important thing to watch out for though is overloading the circuit. Let’s say you have a range hood that draws five amps. A microwave draws between five to 10 amps. So, in most cases, you could safely have a range hood and microwave on the same circuit. Consult your appliance manufacturer’s manual or an electrician before doing so.
With a 15 to 20 amp breaker, you don’t want to put your range hood on the same circuit as an electric stove. Electric stoves pull between 30 and 50 amps, so that breaker would undoubtedly overload.

Does a gas range need a dedicated circuit?
A gas range doesn’t need a dedicated circuit, but it’s not a bad idea. Beyond the control panel and pilot light, there are few electrical components of a gas range. So, you could run some smaller appliances on the same circuit, such as toasters or blenders.
Consult an electrician to make sure that your appliances can run on the same circuit. If you are at all in doubt, put your gas range on a dedicated circuit. This is the safest option to ensure that the circuit does not overload.
Does an electric range need a dedicated circuit?
Yes. Electric stoves draw anywhere from 30 to 60 amps on average. This is much more than your typical 20-amp breaker can handle. So it definitely needs to be on its own circuit breaker with enough amperage.
