Our Top-Rated Wall Mounted Range Hoods Comparison Chart

What is a wall mounted range hood?

A wall mounted range hood is a range hood that is installed on your wall. Wall range hoods can either be ducted or ductless. Ducted hoods are installed with ductwork that vents air to the outside of your home, while ductless hoods recirculate the air within your home using a recirculating kit.

Some wall mount range hoods come with a chimney that covers your ductwork. Our tapered hoods (see below) come with chimneys, but chimney length will depend on the model.

PLJW 130 Wall Mounted Range Hood

Some wall hoods can also function as under cabinet hoods. Under cabinet hoods, as the name suggests, fit under your cabinet and thus don’t require a chimney. See in the picture below.

PLJW 121

Wall range hoods are most commonly installed in between cabinets or open shelves. They can also stand out by themselves, especially when combined with a creative backsplash. Take a look at some of our wall mounted range hoods below.

How do I choose a wall mounted range hood?

The most important things to consider when choosing your wall mounted range hood are size, venting requirements, CFM, and sones. There are a few others as well, which we cover in our video below.

You can also check out our buyer’s guide if you have any more questions about choosing your wall range hood.

Do your wall mounted range hoods come with chimneys?

All of our wall hoods come with two 15” chimneys. Two of our models function both as wall hoods and under cabinet hoods: the PLJW 109 and the ProVW. Both of these fit under your cabinet. But they also come in two other styles: the PLJW 109 WC (wall chimney) and the ProV WC. These are the wall mounted range hoods that come with a chimney.

For the chimney requirements of our other models, take a look at the spec sheets on the product pages.

How to Measure for Your Wall Mounted Range Hood

When you purchase your wall mounted range hood, you’ll want to measure the following:

  • Mounting height for your range hood
Mounting Height Diagram for Your Range Hood

Indoor vent hoods should be installed between 28” and 36” from your cooktop. Any closer than 28” may cause damage, and further away than 36” will decrease the efficiency of your hood. Some cooking exhaust will escape into your kitchen.

For more information on range hood mounting height, check out our complete guide here.

  • Chimney height

Measure from the top of your range hood to the ceiling to find out the chimney length you need. Our wall and island range hoods come with chimneys, while under cabinet hoods and range hood inserts do not. They are telescoping, so they can accommodate most 8’ and 9’ ceilings.

You can purchase chimney extensions for some under cabinet models, too.

Click here for more information on chimney extensions.

  • Width of your range

Your range hood should be one size larger than your range to ensure that all your cooking exhaust is vented outside the home efficiently. For example, if you have a 30” range, a 36” range hood is ideal.

For more information on range hood size, click here.

  • Width of your cabinets (if the hood will be mounted between cabinets)

If you want your wall hood to mount between cabinets, it goes without saying that the hood has to fit between them. It’s ideal to give your hood a couple of inches of space on each side so it doesn’t look cramped.

Mistakes to Avoid When Buying or Installing Your Wall Mounted Range Hood

Here’s a list of mistakes to avoid when installing your wall hood:

  1. A common mistake we see is mounting your hood too close to the cooktop. This can cause damage not only to your range hood, but also your surrounding cabinetry.
  2. Occasionally customers may mount their hood too far from the cooktop, which allows the steam and smoke produced from your cooking to escape into the kitchen before it travels through the range hood.
  3. Some of our range hoods come with a mounting bracket, but not all of them. This is a common misconception among our customers. If you’re not sure whether your hood should come with a mounting bracket, call us at (877) 901-5530.
  4. Sometimes, people mistakenly purchase a hood with a lower CFM. We recommend purchasing a higher CFM hood and using the lower settings to enjoy a quiet motor. During emergencies, you can always turn on the max speed to evacuate all the smoke from your home.
  5. Some of our customers install ductwork that is too small for their range hood. Here’s a duct sizing chart to help you determine what ductwork you should use. Small ductwork may restrict airflow outside your home and decrease the efficiency of your hood.

Common Range Hood Myths

You need a contractor to install your range hood.

Range hood installation is simple and easy. We have several helpful installation videos on this page and an installation guide available here.

400 CFM is enough for your range hood.

Low-CFM range hoods are especially popular in big box stores because they are easily manufactured in bulk. But these hoods lack the durability and quality of a professional-grade Proline range hood. Our lowest CFM hood is 600 and they reach up to 2000. High CFM drastically improves ventilation in your home and ensures that your air is clean and fresh.

For more information, check out our article: Is 400 CFM enough for my range hood?

You need make-up air for 400 CFM range hoods.

It’s important to note that some building codes will mandate make-up air kits, regardless of the CFM of your range hood. In that particular case, make-up air is required.

Otherwise, make-up air is only necessary for specific situations. Consider the size of your kitchen and the number of exhaust fans to determine if you require make-up air. The higher the CFM of your hood and the smaller your kitchen, the more likely you will require make-up air.

How to Install a Wall Mounted Range Hood

We have an informative video on our YouTube channel that goes over how to install the ductless PLFW 520. There aren’t many ductless range hood installation videos out there. We hope that this can save you some time and effort!

Our most popular wall mounted range hood installation video is a PLJW 129 ducted hood installation. It’s not on our list above, but the installation process is similar for most of our wall range hoods.

Note: We do not recommend using flexible ductwork. It is flimsy, made of cheaper material, and not as durable as rigid ductwork, which will last years. Additionally, the shape of flex ductwork encourages the buildup of dust and debris. This further restricts airflow and wears on your range hood or vent hood’s motor.

For more information on choosing the best type of duct for your range hood, check out this complete guide.

Can my wall mounted range hood be installed outdoors?

At Proline Range Hoods, we manufacture some range hoods in a durable, professional-quality 304 stainless steel that is perfect for outdoor use. Just make sure your hood is built with 304 SS instead of 430 SS.

Outdoor hoods also require more CFM than indoor hoods. Our outdoor wall hoods run at a minimum of 1000 CFM. Several are 2000 CFM for the most demanding cooks and intense barbecue grills. Check out our professional outdoor hoods.

How to Maintain Your Wall Mounted Range Hood

Parts of your range hood will require consistent cleaning, approximately every few weeks to few months depending on usage. Other parts of the hood like the blower and ductwork rarely, if ever, require cleaning, while some require more frequent maintenance.

Exterior

The outside of your range hood can be cleaned quickly using either glass cleaner or acetone. Take a look at this video below, where we clean one of our wall mount range hoods.

Filters

Proline’s hoods come with stainless steel baffle or mesh filters that require cleaning about every three to six weeks depending on your cooking habits. Ductless hoods also include charcoal filters; these don’t need to be cleaned, but instead require replacement.

Range Hood Filter Guide

Inside Your Range Hood

The inside of your hood will likely only need to be wiped down every two months or so. As long as you keep your filters clean and in good condition, the inside of your hood will stay pretty clean too.

Check out our step-by-step guide on cleaning the inside of your hood here. Just like cleaning the outside of your hood, glass cleaner will work great for the interior!

How to Clean the Inside of Your Range Hood

Blower

Similar to the inside of your hood, your blower won’t need heavy maintenance as long as you keep your filters clean. Once or twice a year will suffice, if at all. It only takes five minutes! Click here for instructions and check out the video below!

Ductwork

The ductwork will be the least of your worries – it’s yet another part that is dependent on how clean you keep your filters. Cleaning your ductwork is a task that’s probably best left to professionals: check out this article for more information.
